Activities and Things To Do At Our End Of The Lake!

Fishing & Guided Trout Fishing Tours On Taupo's Famous Rivers.

Motuoapa is 10 minutes from Turangi you can fish the famous Tongariro river, the fly fishing mecca of the world, with its beautiful rainbow and brown trout. Ten minutes in the other direction, the Tauranga-Taupo river and close by the pretty, bush clad Hinemaiaia river. At Kahotea House we can arrange for first time and experienced fishers, a fly fishing guide who will also supply all the equipment you will need for the day including rods, waders, boots etc as well as a picnic lunch.

New Zealand trout fishing is regarded as some of the best in the world. Kahotea House is very close to the famous Tongariro, Tauranga-Taupo and Hinemaiaia rivers. We suggest a guide to teach you how to fly fish or he can take the experiences fishers to the best places to catch that whopper. Bring it back and your hosts will be delighted to cook it for you. Trips are suitable for the beginner or experienced anglers. (Full tuition provided for beginners.)

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

  The night before you wish to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Shirley-Ann or Richard will contact the alpine shuttle services to secure seats for their guests. The shuttle collects guests at the bottom of the hill Kahotea House is situated on, and drops them off at the end of the tramp. Your car remains at Kahotea House where is is safe. You will need good walking shoes such as cross trainers or hiking boots, backpack for your lunch and water, sunscreen and a hat. With prior arrangement, Shirley-Ann will pack you a lunch for your day out. The tramp usually takes the average walker 7 hours.The shuttles pick up from 6.45am and they collect trampers from the end of the walk at 4.30pm. There are several buses and you are asked to stay with the driver who picks you up in the morning, you will be well looked after. See our special package for this activity.

Cost is around $NZ45.00 per person. The tramp is 'free' in summer, guides are available in winter.

Therapeutic Massage

Nothing better than a therapeutic massage after a long tramp or a busy day on the water. Kahotea House can arrange a massage for you in your room so all you need do is relax and enjoy.

Kayaking

Kayaking on the wetlands 1km from Kahotea House. You can watch the swans, ducks, kingfishers (all introduced species to New Zealand) and all manner of New Zealand native birds in the trees as you paddle quietly through their natural habitat. Kayaks are available for hire in Turangi.

 

Hire Boats

Small boats and trout fishing lisences are available to hire at the Motuoapa marina at the bottom of the hill from Kahotea House. Drive yourself along the shores, try trolling for trout or cross the end of the lake and picnic at a secluded bay.

 

Rafting

The Togariro offers rafters some wild white water which is a very popular pastime especially in summer, 'Hire' companies with experienced guides are in nearby Turangi. They provide transport to and from the best rafting areas.

Swimming

Turangi has a new pool complex where swimmers can do their laps. Aquasize on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8.30am for an hour. Tokaanu Thermal Pools are available after that hard day's fishing or tramping. The ideal way to relax and work out all that excess lactose. In summer the pure fresh water of the lake is very refresshing. Kahotea House is less than a kilometere from a popular swimming , water skiing bay. Ideal to enjoy a picnic lunch, swim and watch the children on a water biscuit or water skiing.!

Walks.

There are many short walks around the southern end of the lake. Kahotea House has a list in every room for your convenience.

Golf

Turangi has a pleasant 18 hole golf course and visitors are welcome. Further afield is Kinloch, Wairakei and the two golf courses in Taupo, Centennial and Tauhara.

 Tongariro Expeditions

Taupo's only direct service to and from the Tongariro crossing, New Zealand's best one day hike. Guiding services in winter and full hire service available year round.

 AJ Charters

AJ Charters welcomes you aboard its 38’ two storey catamaran, ‘DAYDREAM’, to explore the trout fishing capital of the world on the southern end of Lake Taupo, New Zealand. Fish the shores of Turangi, Tokaanu, Waihi, Pukawa, Omori, Kuratau and the renowned Stump Bay where the Tongariro River enters the lake.

National Trout Centre (Recommended by your hosts)
The Taupo fishing district's first trout was caught in April 1904. It weighed 1.36 kg. Since then the popularity of this region as a prized trout fishery has increased to the point where approximately 70,000 – 80,000 fishing licences are sold every year. The fishery is world renowned for the quality and size of its fish, and is particularly special in that it is a wild fishery – the population sustained by wild trout and not by hatchery stocking.
